What Is Weed and Feed?
Weed and feed is a combined lawn treatment that delivers fertilizer and selective broadleaf herbicide in a single application — feeding your turf while killing dandelions, clover, plantain, chickweed, and other broadleaf weeds in one pass. Mow.ca offers professional weed-and-feed service in 48+ Canadian cities, with formulations adjusted for each province's pesticide regulations.
Provincial Compliance — What We Use Where
Canada's cosmetic pesticide bans mean different products are legal in different provinces. Our crews carry province-specific kits:
- Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, PEI, New Brunswick — Class 11 or organic-listed products only: iron-based FeHEDTA, corn gluten meal, acetic acid spot treatments, chelated micronutrient fertilizers
- Alberta, BC, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Yukon, NWT — selective broadleaf herbicides where permitted: 2,4-D / mecoprop / dicamba combinations paired with slow-release nitrogen (28-0-3, 32-0-4)
- All provinces — our applicators hold provincial pesticide certifications (OPEP in Ontario, MELCCFP in Quebec, Alberta Pesticide Applicator Certificate, BC Industrial Vegetation, etc.)
Why Combined Treatment Beats Separate Bookings
- Cost savings — a combined visit costs $70 to $160 vs. $110 to $290 for separate fertilization + weed control bookings
- Better timing — the herbicide attaches to actively growing weed leaves while fertilizer feeds the recovering turf in the same window
- Fewer property visits — less crew time, less disruption, lower carbon footprint
- Synergistic recovery — dead weed gaps fill in faster because the surviving grass is fed and growing
Recommended Schedule — Two Treatments per Season
| Application | Timing | Target |
|---|---|---|
| **Spring weed-and-feed** | Mid-May (after second mow) | Dandelions in flower, spring-emerged broadleaves |
| **Fall weed-and-feed** | Early-mid September | Winter-prep weeds, root-storage broadleaves |
We check soil moisture, weed pressure, and 48-hour rainfall forecast before every application. Wrong-time application wastes product and can damage turf.
