Power Raking Service — Aggressive Thatch Removal
Power raking is an aggressive thatch removal process that uses a motorized rake with rotating flail blades to slice through and pull up the layer of dead grass, roots, and debris (thatch) that accumulates between the soil surface and the living grass blades.
When Power Raking Is Needed
While light thatch — under half an inch (1.3 cm) — actually benefits your lawn by insulating roots and retaining moisture, a thatch layer thicker than three-quarters of an inch becomes a barrier that:
- Blocks water infiltration — rain and irrigation run off instead of soaking in
- Prevents fertilizer from reaching the root zone
- Harbours fungal diseases like snow mold and dollar spot
- Creates an uneven surface prone to scalping during mowing
Power raking is more aggressive than standard dethatching — it's the right choice when thatch exceeds one inch or when years of neglect have created a dense, matted layer.
How to Check Your Thatch Layer
Cut a small wedge from your lawn about 3 inches deep using a sharp knife. The brownish, spongy layer between the green grass blades and the soil is thatch. If it's over half an inch, it's time for thatch removal. Over one inch calls for power raking specifically.
Our Power Raking Process
At Mow.ca, we use commercial-grade power rakes calibrated to your lawn's specific needs:
- 1Assessment — measure thatch depth across multiple areas of the lawn
- 2Power rake — rotating blades slice through the thatch layer, pulling debris to the surface
- 3Collection — all loosened thatch material is raked and removed from the property
- 4Overseeding — seed is spread into the opened turf to fill thin areas
- 5Starter fertilizer — promotes rapid establishment of new seedlings
Best Timing
The optimal time for power raking in most of Canada is early spring (April to mid-May) or early fall (September). Spring timing works best when grass is actively growing but before summer heat stress arrives.
Pricing
Power raking costs $100 to $250 for a standard residential lawn, depending on thatch severity and lot size. Call (833) 550 - LAWN (5296) for a quote.
